Learning to Crawl Before I Walk

EvilOrly\’s Poker Journey

The Wrong Path?

In this segment I am going to discuss a little bit about what Titans01 left in the comments section. I figure it is as easy to write about it here than in that area. Here is the section I want to talk about…

” I would probably try and pick one thing and work on improving it. Nothing wrong with playing something different here and there but maybe focus on one. Since you’ve had this blog you’ve played NL ring, limit ring, and SnGs. Just my 2 cents. Good luck, keep grinding and it will turn around.”

This was my plan before the blog came around. I talked with Maxpen and we were speaking of the strength of really knowing one format of the game very well. I agree with him and I agree with Titans. I decided NL ring games should be my choice. The training options are more abundant, more people to talk to about it, and in the long term I believe it will make more money.

I started Playing 25NL and would have a winning session here and there, but never a whole day in the black. I would always end up in the red. Eventually my BR dropped to the point where it was not ‘protected’ at the 25NL level per Fox’s BR management article. This happened just after the blog started and I thought that I should move onto something that was more stable for me so I could control the situation which was limit and SnGs.

Maybe this is the wrong way to go then? Should I ride the storm out, maybe only play at sites I can go below 25NL? Maybe I just panicked to fast and ran away. I am still new to the world of poker and frighten easy 🙂 .

So anyone who actually reads this let me know what you think.

Now onto the update.

I just had a whole writeup but I reread it and sounded to much like a pity party, so I deleted it. Many more are having problems besides me, I just need to find a way to fix them. So here is the rundown.

Been playing on stars for SnGs and Limit games, I have cashed 50% of my SnGs so far and I ran into a bit of trouble in the ring games. It wasn’t bad play by me but I couldn’t dodge 5 bad players at my table. If I had 1 or 2 other decent players at the table it would have been more manageable. I do believe I prevented alot of damage that could have been done though.

I also went to starluck casino and did the bonus there, came out $40 ahead.

  1. I think the choice to go with NL ring games is best. I can definitely relate on the ‘bad beats/SNG’ rant. With SNG’s, even the best players avgerage an ITM% of 50%….or less. So you’re busting out of the money half the time….you basically have to come to terms with that(if you were to choose the SNG route). It’s almost like you have to get comfortable with losing over half the time. It’s tough….I sure as hell couldn’t do it(I tried).

  2. Hey someone else who reads this!!! 🙂 Welcome.

Another thing I thought of as well is maybe I should try more full ring NL games instead of shorthanded?

  3. If your comfortable playing SnGs then play those. They are a good way to build up a bankroll with a smaller variance. If you are wanting to play ring games then I suggest NL. The only reason I would play limit is if I was bonus whoring. NL is just more lucrative right now. Full ring is fine if your worried about variance but there is more money in 6 max.

Also the casino whoring is a good idea on the side. I know you was a little disappointed in only making $40 but that’s easy money. If you do 4 or 5 of these a month that’s an extra $200.

  5. Full or Short-handed…I was more comfortable with full ring games at first. It only takes a little adjusting when you move to shorthanded. A lot of guys REALLY open up there hand selection PF, but if you look at Titan’s stats, you can see that you don’t need to open it up THAT much(I think his VP is around 18, where I know others who are in the upper 20’s). Personally, I’m a ‘squeezer’, so my VP is low as well. I think you’ll notice, if were to look at the stats of the looser players, their aggression is MUCH higher(both PF and AF). I guess it just depends on YOUR style…what works for YOU. Coming from the SNG grind, I’m a TAG. I like being confident when I enter the pot that I have the best hand, and be able to get away from it OTF if I feel I’m beat.
